Chapter 1

The Sea Appears

It rained all night. It rained so hard that Ruby could hear it drumming on the roof in her sleep, and in the morning, when she opened the front door in her gumboots, there was a sea at the bottom of the driveway.

It was the biggest puddle she had ever seen. It stretched from the letterbox all the way to the stormwater drain, and it was brown in the middle and shiny at the edges, and the sky was in it, upside down.

"Mum," said Ruby. "There's an ocean."

"There's a puddle," said Mum, from the kitchen. "Don't go in past the tops of your boots."

Ruby went down the driveway and stood at the shore.

An ocean needs a ship. She found one straight away: a big flat gum leaf, blown down in the night, long and curved like a canoe. She put it on the water. It floated.

An ocean needs a crew. She found them on the path, in a line, going about their business. Ants. Seven of them. She put a twig down across their path, and when they climbed onto it, she lifted the twig very carefully and laid it on the leaf.

The ants ran about on the leaf looking surprised.

"Crew," said Ruby. "I am Captain Ruby. We are sailing to the drain."

Nobody gets left behind. Read on a rainy morning and then we went outside.
