Chapter 1

The Morning Round

Every morning, when the mist was still in the valley, Moss put on his red postbag and started up the mountain.

He was a goat, and a young one, which is the best kind of animal for a mountain post. His feet were small and hard and certain. He could stand on a rock the size of a teacup and feel perfectly comfortable. And he liked going up. Going up was what he was for.

The first letter was always for the shepherd, whose hut was just above the tree line. "Morning, Moss," the shepherd said, every day, and gave him a crust.

The second was for the beekeeper, higher up, where the heather was. The bees knew Moss and did not sting him. He left her letters in a tin on the gatepost and she waved from among the hives.

The third was for the weather station, higher still, a little white hut with instruments spinning on the roof, where a man called Brun wrote down the wind. Brun was shy and did not talk much, but he always had the kettle on and he always said thank you.

Dominic
A goat, a bridge and a letter. I did not expect to cry at a goat book.
