Chapter 1

The Parcel

The parcel came on Saturday and it was for Otto.

It said OTTO on the front in big curly letters, and it was from Aunt Ingrid, who lived far away and sent things.

Otto opened it on the kitchen floor. Inside was tissue paper. Inside the tissue paper was more tissue paper. Inside that was a hat.

It was purple. It was soft. It had a wide, wide brim, like a dinner plate. Otto put it on.

The hat came down over his eyes, over his nose, and stopped at his chin.

"I can't see," said Otto, from inside the hat.

"It's a bit big," said Mum.

"It's ENORMOUS," said Otto, and he laughed, because being inside a hat was funny, and then he walked into the table.

The card said: Dear Otto, a hat for a big boy. Love, Aunt Ingrid.

"She hasn't seen you since you were a baby," said Dad. "She must think you've grown a lot."

"I have grown a lot," said Otto, taking the hat off and looking at it. "Just not this much."

He put it on again. He walked into the table again.

It was, he decided, the best hat he had ever had, and it was no use at all.
