Chapter 1

The Campaign (Phase One)

MONDAY Entry 1 of 5 (daily, 7:00 p.m., non-negotiable) Status: ON TRACK Mood (1 to 5): 5

Dear Diary,

I have never kept a diary, because I've never seen the return on it. But Ms Hartigan says the school captain interview panel "likes to see reflection," so you are now a line item. Welcome. Please keep up.

Here is who I am, so we don't have to do it again.

Priya Menon. Sixteen. Year 11. Founder of the Homework Club, Secretary of the Environment Committee, Treasurer of the Debating Society, and, as of nine days from now, School Captain. I have a planner. It has tabs. It has a colour code: green is academic, blue is committee, pink is social (currently unused), and red is THE CAMPAIGN.

THE CAMPAIGN (five phases):

PRIYA! The Diary of the Overachiever

1. Nomination. DONE. First in the queue. Mr Deng said, "Of course," which I'm taking as an endorsement. 2. Platform. DONE. Three promises, laminated. Recycling bins on every corridor. A quiet study room. A suggestion box that somebody actually opens. 3. Visibility. IN PROGRESS. Posters up on all four floors, including the science block nobody goes to, because thoroughness is a message. 4. Speech. Drafted. Timed. 2 minutes 48 seconds, under the 3 minute limit by a margin I'm comfortable with. 5. Results. Thursday week.

There is one other candidate.

Lena Kowalski

His name is Rafe Oduya. I'm going to describe him factually. He is in my year. He has a skateboard. He has, as far as I can tell from four years of being in the same building, no committee affiliations. He arrived at the nomination meeting eleven minutes late with his helmet still on and said, "Is this the captain thing? Cool. Put me down."

Mr Deng put him down.

I'm not worried. I'm noting it. There's a difference.

Priya Menon has a five-point plan to become school captain. Her opponent has a skateboard and no plan at all. Her diary was not prepared for him to be likeable.

Funny, sharp, and the drain cover pays off. The planner is the real main character.
