Chapter 1

Setting Off

The party was at three o'clock, under the big rhubarb leaf, and everyone was going.

The ants were going, in a line. The beetles were going, in their best shiny coats. The frog was going, in one jump. Even the slow old tortoise from next door was going, and he had left yesterday.

Gus the snail set off straight after breakfast.

"Plenty of time," said Gus. "It is only across the garden."

He went along the path. He went past the flowerpot. He went up the side of the flowerpot, because it was in the way, and down the other side, which took most of the morning.

"Hello, Gus," said a worm, poking out of the soil. "Going to the party?"

"Yes," said Gus. "Plenty of time."

"It's nearly lunch," said the worm.

Gus looked at the sun. The sun was high and round and it was, in fact, nearly lunch.

"Oh," said Gus.

He went a little bit faster, which for a snail is the same speed with more worry in it.

By the time he reached the edge of the lawn, the ants had already arrived at the party. He could hear them, far away, laughing their tiny laughs.

And between Gus and the rhubarb leaf was the pond.
